WHY ATHLETES TEST

The 5 markers that change how athletes train

Testosterone (extended range)
Tested up to 502 nmol/L. Standard tests cap at 50 — useless if you're optimising or on TRT. Yours gives a real number, every time.
Ferritin
Your iron stores. Endurance crashes when this drops — common in runners and women.
CRP
Silent inflammation. The number that tells you when to deload.
Cortisol
Chronic stress signal. High = your training is winning, you’re losing.
Vitamin D
Most UK athletes are deficient half the year. Affects bone, immune and hormones.
WHAT'S INCLUDED

What's included in this test

56 biomarkers across 15 panels, all clinician-reviewed.

RED BLOOD CELLS 7 markers

How efficiently your blood carries oxygen — the engine of endurance and energy. Low values can show in fatigue, breathlessness or slow recovery.

Haemoglobin Haematocrit RBC MCV MCH MCHC RDW
WHITE BLOOD CELLS 7 markers

Your immune system in numbers. Tells you whether you're fighting an infection, inflamed from training, or recovering well.

White Cell Count Neutrophils Lymphocytes Monocytes Eosinophil Basophil Blood film report
CLOTTING STATUS 2 markers

How well your blood clots and circulates. Important if you train at intensity, take supplements that affect clotting, or have a family history of cardiovascular issues.

Platelets Count MPV
KIDNEY FUNCTION 4 markers

Filters waste from intense training and high-protein diets. High readings can signal dehydration, overtraining or supplement overload.

Urea Creatinine Sodium Uric acid
LIVER FUNCTION 5 markers

Your liver processes everything you eat, drink, train through and supplement with. A stressed liver means slower recovery and worse fat metabolism.

Bilirubin ALK AST ALT Gamma GT
DIABETES 1 marker

How your body manages fuel. Even lean athletes can run high — early warning for energy crashes, fat gain and metabolic drift.

HBA1C
INFLAMMATION 2 markers

Checks systemic inflammation markers including CRP and Creatine Kinase (CK), which can indicate infection, autoimmune activity or muscle stress.

CRP CK
CHOLESTEROL STATUS 5 markers

Your cardiovascular system under load. The numbers that predict long-term heart health, well before symptoms appear.

Triglycerides Cholesterol HDL cholesterol LDL cholesterol Non-HDL cholesterol
THYROID FUNCTION 5 markers

Your thyroid runs your metabolism, energy and mood. When it's off, you feel tired, gain weight or struggle to recover — even when you're training hard.

TSH FT4 FT3 Anti-TG TPOAb
HORMONE PANEL 8 markers

The drivers of strength, libido, recovery and mood. The most powerful levers you can pull on performance — and the ones your GP almost never checks unless you're ill.

Testosterone (extended range) Oestradiol SHBG Prolactin FSH LH DHEAS Progesterone
STRESS 1 marker

Chronically high cortisol means your body is breaking down faster than it's rebuilding. The number that tells you to deload before your body forces you to.

Cortisol
PROSTATE 1 marker

The standard early-detection marker for prostate health in men over 40. Quiet but important.

PSA
PROTEIN 3 markers

The building blocks behind muscle repair, immunity and hormone transport. Low protein markers show up as slow recovery, weak immunity and stalled progress.

Total Protein Albumin Globulin
IRON STATUS 2 markers

Your iron stores. When ferritin drops, endurance crashes — common in runners, women and anyone training heavy volume.

Iron Ferritin
VITAMINS 3 markers

The nutrients that drive energy, immunity and recovery. Most UK adults run low on at least one of these — and supplementation only works when you know your starting point.

Vitamin D3 Folate Vitamin B12

Magnesium Blood Test
Magnesium isn't in your Athlete panel — but it should be. The mineral that drives muscle function, sleep quality and energy production. Low levels show up as cramping, poor sleep and chronic fatigue.

1 biomarker
Advanced kidney function marker. The most accurate way to measure kidney health, especially under heavy training load.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I take my blood sample?
We post you a free venous home collection kit with everything you need — sample tubes, instructions and a pre-paid Tracked 24 return envelope. You’ll need someone trained to draw blood, or you can add a phlebotomist home visit at checkout and we’ll come to you.
When should I take my sample?
Morning is best — most hormones (especially testosterone and cortisol) follow a daily rhythm and read most accurately before 10am. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours beforehand so your recovery and inflammation markers read true.
How fast will I receive my results?
Same day your sample arrives at our UK lab. You’ll get a notification when your AI report is ready in your private dashboard.
What if I take the sample wrong?
If you have a problem during collection — the tube won’t fill, you spill it, the cap leaks — message us before you post the sample and we’ll send a free replacement kit. Once it reaches the lab, retests carry a £15 fee, so it’s always cheaper to flag it with us first.
Will I understand the results?
Yes. Every result comes with a plain-English AI report explaining what each marker means and what’s optimal for your age and goals. If you want to talk it through, you can book a consultation with one of our doctors.
Where is my sample tested?
All samples are processed at our own UK laboratory, Bloods UK Ltd. We run the lab in-house — meaning shorter chain of custody, faster turnaround, and tighter quality control than third-party processors. We’re currently going through UKAS accreditation, with the audit process underway.
How is this different from a blood test from my GP?
The NHS tests for disease — we test for optimisation. Most GP panels run 10–15 markers focused on diagnosing illness. Ours runs 56, including hormones, recovery and performance markers your GP won’t check unless you’re already unwell. You also get plain-English explanations and you keep your data.
Do I need to be an athlete to take this test?
No. The test is built around the markers that matter for performance, recovery and hormones — but those same markers run your everyday energy, mood and metabolism. You just need to want a clear picture of what’s going on.

Very impressed with the amount of markers checked, especially for the price. The detailed review helped make sense of the results — and the turnaround was super speedy.
